Adventures in Italy – Visit to the Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia

The name Mille Miglia sends smiles to the faces of racing enthusiasts and classic car aficionados.

Established in 1927 the Mille Miglia was an open-road motorsport endurance race. Initially, the race was “thousand Roman miles” in a figure-eight-shaped course of roughly 1500 km in length starting from Brescia to Rome and back again to Brescia.  Later races followed twelve other routes of varying total lengths.

Being car enthusiasts, we decided to visit Brescia and the Mille Miglia Museum.

The museum of this legendary race is housed in an old Benedictine monastery, the Monastery of Saint Eufemia.  It is a beautiful building complex of immense archaeological value whose construction began in the year 1008!

We discovered an extensive collection of beautiful cars and artifacts from every race since 1927.  Here is an example of the display.  To put the period into context, not only was the automobile displayed, but also other relevant artifacts of the period.  Here in the background, you can see a fashionable dress of the period.

Besides the cars, there were videos of the races, drivers' comments, and over 130,000 documents of the Mille Miglia.

The museum was absolutely fascinating.  We marveled how the site not only preserved the Monastery but how the Mille Miglia Museum Association was able to incorporate the beautiful automotive exhibit within the Monastery.

We found the museum easily accessible with a wheelchair.
