Temporary Shower Curtain Rod Extension - Do-it-yourself!

During one of our trips to Europe, we rented a self-contained apartment.  Since my spouse is handicapped and mobility impaired, there are certain must-haves that any apartment has to have.  One requirement is a walk-in shower (or an Italian shower, as it is called in Europe) large enough to be able to enter with a cane or walker and to accommodate a shower chair.

No problem!  Photos and measurements were exchanged.  Everything appeared to be perfect.

Once we arrived, though, we discovered things did not quite pan out as we had anticipated.  The shower stall was of typical European design.  Once you stepped inside it, there was no shower door to completely close it off.  In fact, there was just a glass panel that only covered half the length of the shower.  The front top corner was attached to a bracket which was attached to a stainless steel rod.  The other end of the rod was attached to the wall (see 1 in the photo below).  The glass panel (2) was anchored on one side against a wall with a bracket attached to the wall.  The bottom of the glass panel was attached to the floor.  As you can see by (3) the white shower tub on the floor (3) the glass panel leaves half of the shower exposed.

This really posed a problem, as every time my spouse showered, the bathroom got flooded!  We tried attaching a shower curtain to the rod (1).  However, that did not leave enough space to shower while sitting on the shower chair.  The curtain cut the usable shower area in half.  And with the shower chair inside, there just was not enough room for anyone to shower without the curtain sticking to your body or without ripping down the curtain.

Somehow, we needed to enlarge the area where we could attach the curtain without doing a major renovation.  The solution had to be sturdy enough to not crash down while showering, but easily removable as not to damage the premises.

We went to the local hardware store, to see what solutions could be available without breaking the bank.  This is the solution we came up with:

Items Needed for Project:

4  - 4" Adjustable Stainless Steel Hose/Pipe Clamps

1 - 1 Inch (250 mm) diameter Flexible Water Pipe Tubing PEX Pipe

Duct tape

Screwdriver, flat head

Scissors

Instructions:

On each end of the stainless steel rod (A) which held the glass panel in place, we took 2 of the adjustable stainless steel hose clamps (B) and looped them over the rod (A) in a criss-cross (B), then slipped one end of the flexible pipe (C) through the loop we left open on the bottom of the rod (A):

We tightened the hose clamps with the screwdriver.  Finally, we taped one side of the flexible white tube against the tile wall with the duct tape:

And on the other side, we applied the duct tape up and over the glass panel to hold the end of the flexible white tube in place:

Mission accomplished!  This is the end result: a curved shower rod extending past the glass panel and covering the floor basin of the shower.
