In my “Hello and Welcome” post, I mentioned our love of travel. My husband claims that I
usually pack everything including the kitchen sink. The worst feeling is when the occasional TSA agent gives me a
dirty look when rummaging through our luggage.
But honestly, there are certain things I just can’t live
without. My must-have kitchen tool kit
consists of these items:
From left to right they are:
- a can opener that has a spinning knob that not only securely grabs onto cans and easily cuts through the lid, but is also comfortable to turn and requires little effort
- a chef’s knife – to mince, slice, and chop vegetables and meats alike, crush garlic, even assist in disjointing poultry; this one has a 5 inch (12 cm) handle and 5-inch blade. I also use it as a scraper and "scoop", when I finely chop onions, garlic, parsley and the like. After chopping, I scrape the chopped food item into a little pile on my cutting board, and then with one hand holding the chef's knife and with the other, I scoop up the chopped items, to then add them to my pan or mixing bowl. This has got to be my favorite kitchen tool.
- a cheese slicer – because there are so many lovely cheeses in this world to enjoy
- a paring knife
- a set of 4 Ikea measuring spoons: 1 T or tablespoon (15 ml), 1 t or teaspoon (5 ml), ½ t (2.5 ml), and ¼ t (1.2 ml)
- a double-hinged waiter’s corkscrew
And that is all! - - And my husband says, I take everything including the kitchen sink on our trip... Really!
Holiday rental apartments usually come equipped with cups,
plates, salad/soup bowls, flatware, basic stovetop pans. So, for the rest, I
can pretty much improvise.
No blender? No
problem, you can always use a fork to beat an egg or use a soup spoon to stir cake batter.
No knife sharpener?
No problem, you can always use the bottom edge of a ceramic coffee cup. Carefully, with some pressure, glide the knife blade along the bottom edge
of the cup, repeat several times on both sides:
Easy peasy. No stress!

I never leave home without my trusty pocket knife that always comes in handy. Although, I have received a few glares when going through metal detectors. 😉
ReplyDeleteI too never leave home without my trusty Swiss army knife. However, this definitely gets put in the suitcase that gets checked and never, ever in my carry-on. - Tovarisch, you haven't flown lately, have you?! The TSA does not give you glares any more. If you don't mind missing your flight because you have one in your carry-on: you'll end up in a new line. This time possibly for a strip search, more paperwork to fill out, .... AND they'll confiscate your trusty knife!
