Back in early May 2020 experts in China and Korea started to tell the population to
wear masks to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus. At that time, the World Health Organization (WHO) was initially telling us that face masks
would not protect us from the virus. Since then, the WHO has reversed its position citing studies that indicate wearing face masks reduces the risk of coronavirus spread and infection.
Not only does wearing a mask protect the wearer from infecting others, but it has been observed, that people tend to stand further away from a mask wearer.
The Coronavirus (Covid-19) is spread via respiratory droplets that are expelled when you talk, shout, sing, cough, sneeze... Although a mask may not be 100% effective, any kind of impediment to spreading the droplets is better than nothing.
Since the period when the virus shows its symptoms is
anywhere between 2 to 10 days from exposure, I would rather err on the side of
safety and follow the Asian and now worldwide model. Wear
a mask, when leaving your home to protect others.
For a while recently,
unless you are a health care provider working on the front lines, you could not
purchase a mask.
In California, the governor had recommended using
makeshift masks in 2020: even a simple bandanna covering your nose and mouth is better
than nothing.
Here are some early examples of creative ways to cover your nose
and mouth with a makeshift mask:
A sleep mask (upside down)
Here is one: a scarf, folded horizontally 3 times, with 2
sheets of paper towels as filters in between the layers
Or a coffee filter mask, needed: 1 Melitta Coffee Filter, 2
rubber bands, scissors,
Or there is always the “boxer shorts” facial mask videos on
the internet…
The boxer shorts mask was pretty funny. But let's face it wearing a face mask helps slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus. And until a vaccine and cure can be found, let's all use this tool to stop the spread. When you wear a mask, it clearly is a sign of respect for others.
As a reminder before putting on a mask, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. Be sure to cover your mouth and nose with the mask. Make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask. Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
Other reminders to help stop the spread: wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, cough or sneeze into your elbow (or disposable tissue), avoid touching your face - especially your eyes, mouth, and nose, practice social distancing.
Be safe, be prudent, wash your hands – until the next post
